Chewing Gum Weekend
Capt. Ed Ramsay
Capt. Ed Ramsay here. Radio was/is my first love. I fell hard for her when I was 4 years old. I’d lay on my stomach, with the Chicago Tribune TV/Radio section spread in front of me. I was mesmerized by the different spellings of her name…she had a penchant for picking names that began with “W”. I loved reading her different names aloud to my parents:
“Mommy, Daddy, look! W-T-T-W, W-G-N, W-C-F-L!”
I hungered to be with her, aching to drift through her airwaves…while she transmitted her voice through a wonderful wooden box of wires and tubes. Then, at the top of each hour, she made sure I remembered her name. A powerful voice boomed out of the radio speaker demanded my absolute attention. “You’re listening to W-C-F-L Radio 10, the Voice of Labor in Chicago. It’s 10 o’clock”. And then…she’d resume sexily modulating her amplitude for me.
Her beauty was everywhere, on billboards and bus stops…those four letters always stopped me cold.
I followed her to college, and got a degree in broadcasting just so I could get to know her better.
But.
Her world meant part time work, no insurance benefits and toiling away in small towns named Bumblef…ending in k, Missouri. I had the pipes, but not the patience to stick around. I changed careers and left my true love behind.
Then.
We reconnected recently. I still had my touch; I knew how to push her buttons just like years ago. She changed her name. It’s now Crossroads Chicago on Live 365. I make it a point to see her every Sunday afternoon from 4pm-5pm CDT. We even came up with a nickname for the two of us, Chewing Gum Weekend. Check us out sometime when you have a chance.
